Understanding Acne Treatment

Acne is a skin disorder that has plagued both the young and old alike for as longas one can remember. Symptoms of acne are pus filled cysts, zits, pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. Acne does not discriminate and affects all and sundry, regardless of age, race, gender and social background. It can be found on face, chest, back and neck.

There are many treatments options available in the market. A mild acne attack can be easily controlled by topical creams or gel. A more severe case would entail a trip to the dermatologist’s office, who will prescribe stronger drugs to help control and lessen the severity of the attacks.

Below are some of the generic treatments for acne.

Benzoyl peroxide

This is used to treat acne in mild cases. Most of the counter medications contain benzoyl peroxide. A favorite choice of acne buster amongst teens and adults, benzoyl peroxide helps destroy the acne causing bacteria as it is an antiseptic agent.

If used as instructed, the severity of acne can be reduced within 2=3 weeks. Benzoyl peroxide actively reduces blocked pores.

On the downside, if treatment is stopped, the recurrence of acne is common. Benzoyl peroxide doesn’t improve the body’s self defense mechanism thus resulting in recurrence of acne if stopped. Some may alos experience dryness of skin if used in excess. Skin peeling is also a common side-effect of benzoyl peroxide.

Accutane

The powerful oral drug Accutane is a drug that shuts down oil production. This treatment is alternative for more serious acne cases.

For the treatment to be successful, you are advised to take 0.5 to 1 mg/kg of Accutane daily. Allow 2-3 weeks to see results.

You are advised to steer clear of Acutane if you are pregnant or are planning to get pregnant soon as it can cause birth defects.

Retin-A

A well-known ingredient in beauty products, Retin A is commonly used as an effective anti-ageing treatment.

A marriage of tretinoin and vitamin A, Retin A is ideal for treating whiteheads and blackheads. Retin A helps to dry up existing pimples and also prevents tehformation of new flare-ups. As an added advantage, it helps smoothen wrinkles but makes skin more sun sensitive. A high SPF is recommended while on treatment. Many have alos noticed irritation and flaking and as such have stopped treatment. This is not advisable as does produce great results you can see and feel.
